Okay, here's the thing: (warning: wanky)

I have an idea or two for DS9 meta... but I'm not sure that my meta would be welcome on ds9agogo because it is not, shall we say, in tune with the general attitudes of most of the group. (In fact, one of the moderators of the group has explicitly expressed vicious hostility directed towards individuals with certain opinions that are not in line with her own in her own personal journal, at one point telling her opponents to "get the fuck out of my fandom.") So I'm afraid I may have to sit this call for meta out. Please accept my regrets.

Hmm. There are really only three topics you cannot broach at the GoGo: crappy Bashir torture (which a certain mod is guilty of, but only on occasions of sucking), Kira/Dukat and Dukat-apologists, and the question of slash.

These are guidelines for a reason: Bashir is because his character gets characterized really crappily by a vast majority of those who write for him, and we feel it is noble to encourage people to not write shit.

Kira/Dukat and Dukat-apology, because 99% of people suck at this and it should be prevented at all costs, and judged harshly when someone does take a good test on it. Should its spread be unchecked, I feel this might swallow fandom up like some sort of sick Spuffy refuge.

And slash. Because it is the preferred pairing gender/sexuality for many people, and isn't going away. Further, it has merits when well written, and the vast objection to it usually comes from people who happen to also be homophobic. And I rather refuse to play with homophobes. They can find their own fandom. The needs of many outweigh the needs of the few.
Well, I have no interest in debating the merits of slash, Dukat-apology (ick!) or Bashir torture. I would disagree with your broad characterization of people who object to slash, however. In my experience, the slash objecters object because they feel the canon evidence for various pairings is weak. It's called "a different interpretation," not "homophobia." But I don't want to get into that argument now.

What I do want to ask is this: if, say, I were to write an essay arguing that DS9's conception of capitalism as depicted by the Ferengi is ludicrous and infantile, you're telling me that certain individuals would not jump down my throat and call me a right-wing fascist? Because yes, I will admit here and now that I am a long time capitalist chick (though, obviously, my views on sexuality are pretty damned liberal, given that I'm sitting here condoning tentacle pr0n as we speak).
Oh, well, nostalgia probably would, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't write it. I disagree with her on a lot of political issues. It doesn't mean I'd be able to keep you two from fighting, but she wouldn't pariah you for it. (Or, at the very least, it would be a personal pariah, and I would abstain from it.) And it sounds interesting, because I agree that the conception on the show is pretty silly and dumb.

I feel the case for Bashir/O'Brien is pretty strong, but even if I didn't, everyone has the right to ship anyone they want. (Except for Kira/Dukat. Unless they can do it and not suck.) I see plenty of het pairings that are just as retarded as some slash pairings, and in that matter, I view fic as an expression of sexual desire and enjoyment. In short, I did agree pretty much with nostalgia on this one.
Okay, then. There shall be meta. It might take me a few days, though, due to work. Wage slavery! Whee!
Excellence.

You say that like I'm some scary far-left beeyatch! Oh, wait... OK.

Eh, but I think it would be a fun meta.

*dies*
Shut up. Just for that it's never happening again. Also, you're sleeping on the couch tonight.
But the couch has fleas!
Still, no sex for you.

Eh, that merely means that at worst I'd bitch at you in annoying fashion in the thread. (And it was a whole nother fandom they were to get the fuck out of. And they haven't. Dammit.)
